Dibrugarh: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said his administration would give Assam Medical College (AMC) a Rs 300 crore financial help for the development of its facilities.
Sarma lavishly praised British benefactor Dr. John Berry White and Assam’s first chief minister Gopinath Bordoloi for their efforts to the establishment of AMC on the occasion of the Dibrugarh Medical Institute’s platinum jubilee celebrations.
He mentioned how many physicians who were trained at the Assam Medical College (AMC) over the previous 75 years are today thought to be leaders in their respective specialties.
According to Sarma, the state government will give the AMC Rs 300 crore to build teacher housing and student housing.
The CM declared that his administration was committed to giving AMC the necessary support as it develops into a cutting-edge research facility equipped to handle modern diseases.
He praised the AMC for upholding its long history of excellence in medical training and care and urged the college administration to begin its expansion and development in line with its legacy.
For “high-end” medical research, the chief minister invited the AMC to collaborate with the state government and IIT-Guwahati. Sarma honoured Kamakhya Prasad Chakraborty, a 1947 batch alumnus, who was also in attendance, on this occasion.
He issued a postal stamp in honour of AMC’s platinum anniversary.
In honour of the British benefactor, the CM requested that the vice chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, to which AMC and other medical colleges are attached, establish a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh for the year’s top MBBS graduate.
Nine advanced life support ambulances that the ONGC donated as part of its CSR initiatives were waved off by him.
