The Government of India’s Ministry of Railways has announced that the railroad project to link the northeastern state of Mizoram to the rest of the nation would soon be completed. Once this project is finished, it will usher in a new era of communication and trade, particularly in the Northeastern region of the nation.
The Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line Project, approved years ago, aimed to construct 51.38 km further of railroad track in Northeast India. In August 2019 alone, 65% of the project had already been finished.
The Chairman of the Railway Board conducted an inspection in February 2020. But since then, the COVID-19 Pandemic has caused significant delays in this effort. Due to lockdowns and labour shortage, the development of the railway has encountered several obstacles.
Another significant factor in the delay of this project is the unfavorable weather in the area. Several laborers died and numerous more were injured in an accident that happened earlier this year at a railway construction site in Manipur. A significant landslide had buried the encampment, which still included numerous workers. In this catastrophe, several soldiers sustained minor injuries.
The project’s initial estimated cost was Rs 2384 Cr, however over time, this figure was also lowered downward to Rs 5021.45 Cr. With 82% of the work finished by the end of November 2022, the deadline was further extended to March 2023.
This project, which is part of the Indian Railways’ Northeast Frontier Railways zone, intends to provide continuous rail access to the Mizoram capital. The landmark project’s concept includes 130 bridges, 23 tunnels, and 4 stations. Kawnpui, Hortoki, Mualkhang, and Sairang are the four stations to be constructed in Mizoram, Northeast India.
