Tripura gearing up for the upcoming Assembly elections; Border to be shut

Prior to the state’s assembly elections on February 16, the Election Commission of India has directed that the borders of the state of Tripura be closed as of this coming Monday.
The Chief Electoral Officer for Tripura, Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao, stated on Sunday that “the international border with Bangladesh and the inter-state boundaries with Assam and Mizoram will be shut from Monday, following directive from the Election Commission.”

This action has reportedly been taken to ensure free and fair elections in Tripura. Furthermore, it aims to stop fraudulent voting in the upcoming elections for the 60 seats in the Tripura legislature.

When discussing the measures taken by the Election Commission, the officials state that the Indian Boundary Security Force, which has already been keeping a close eye on the international border, has been requested to lock the borders in advance of the impending elections. In order to avoid fraudulent voting, he further stated that the department would begin conducting inspections in hostels, hotels, and wedding venues on Monday. Outsiders “do stay in a particular location where he or she is not a voter,” he said.

It is important to remember that Monday is the final day in the state for election campaigning, and all such actions must finish by 4 PM. On February 13, the voting process for postal ballots will also be completed. Out of the 65000 postal ballots sent among the 60 assembly constituencies, more than 56000 have been received as of Sunday.
