    Justice DY Chandrachud Appointed As 50th Chief Justice Of India

    GUWAHATI: The 50th Chief Justice of India has been named as Justice Dhananjay Y Chandrachud (CJI). He will take the oath on November 9, 2022, the day after Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, the current Chief Justice of India, steps down when he turns 65. Justice Chandrachud, who is the son of the CJI with the longest tenure, YV Chandrachud, succeeds Justice UU Lalit. From February 22, 1978, to July 11, 1985, his father presided over the Indian judiciary. On November 8, 2022, the current CJI leaves office after a brief 74-day tenure. On November 10, 2024, Justice Chandrachud will step down from her position as CJI after two years in office.

    Justice Chandrachud held the position of Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013, until his appointment to the Supreme Court. He also served from March 2000 to October 2013 as a judge for the Bombay High Court.

    The Supreme Court’s landmark judgments on the Ayodhya land dispute and the right to privacy, among other issues, included Justice DY Chandrachud.
