DU Ragging Case: Prime Accused Sent to 5-Day Police Remand

The main suspect in the ragging incident at Dibrugarh University has been placed on a five-day police remand.

On Monday at six in the morning, the main suspect Rahul Chetry turned himself in at the Lekhapani Police Station in the Tinsukia district.

Since the ragging event came to light on November 27, Chetry has been evading capture.

Anand Sharma was one of two junior-year students who were beaten up by seniors and recently graduated students who were still residing in the dormitory, it should be mentioned. Sharma decided to leap off the second story of his hostel since he couldn’t handle the pounding; however, the subsequent fall broke his backbone.

Anand Sharma underwent a successful surgery on December 1 while in the hospital.

Dibrugarh Police registered a case, based on a complaint filed by Sharma’s parents against five persons allegedly involved in the incident. Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu informed that he has ordered a Magisterial Inquiry and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sanghamitra Baruah will lead the inquiry. Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that there has “definitely been neglect” on the part of the university in the ragging incident.
