Guwahati City reported the most murder & dowry cases in the preceding four years in 2022 with 72. The Guwahati City Police reported that there would be 71, 52, 61, and 72 murder cases in the following years: 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. In 2022, rape cases increased in a same way. 62 rape incidents were reported in 2022 compared to 60 in 2021 and 39 in 2020. On the other hand, 11 dowry death cases are said to have surfaced in 2022. In 2021, there were two dowry incidences that were reported.
Dowry death instances in Guwahati were reported in 6, 9, and 2 incidents in each of the years 2018, 2019, and 2020. The Police Commissionerate reported that in 2022, there was a 50% fall in the city’s crime rate. Additionally, chain snatching incidents at gunpoint, frequent theft incidents, and daylight killings have left Guwahati people in a state of dread.
However, according to statistics given by the Guwahati municipal Police, overall crime has decreased by 50% in the city.
In a media interview on January 2, the police commissioner claimed that occasionally people in general are irresponsible. “Negligence provides criminals with possibilities to perpetrate crimes. Plans have been made to successfully involve the populace and the civic body in order to contain it,” he continued.
