Pauperized Mizoram drag-on with the un-resolved refugee issues

A recent surge of displaced persons from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), which has ties to the Kuki-Chin ethnic group, have started arriving in the northeastern province of Mizoram, which is already overwhelmed with Kuki-Chin refugees from war-torn Myanmar.

More than 300 Kuki-Chin refugees from CHT were compelled to seek refuge in the northeastern state as a result of military clashes between the Bangladesh Army and insurgents from the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA).

40,000 refugees presently reside in the state, the majority of them are from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The Centre’s delay in distributing the state’s share of taxes and funds, along with the COVID-19 epidemic, has left the Zoramthanga administration in a precarious financial situation.

The problem has delayed debt repayment as well as the timely payment of pensions and salary to retired government employees. The state government does believe that extra funding from the Center will help to remedy the issue by 2023

Mizoram, has engaged in negotiations with Assam in August and November in an effort to resolve the Assam-Mizoram boundary dispute. The chief ministers of the two states met in New Delhi in September in an effort to resolve the dispute peacefully.
